A lot of people ask me: “What camera do you use?” and “What are your settings?”
If you’re going to see a Stones show, it is not allowed to bring in a camera with detachable lenses so the best option is to bring in a good compact camera.
I’m using the Sony RX100 VI, a compact high end camera with fast autofocus, big 1” sensor, light sensitive and a 24-200mm zoom lens.
It’s a small camera which fits easy in your pocket.
I never shoot automatic but use shutter priority: 1/250. This is what you need to catch Jagger sharp as he’s moving a lot. I let the camera decide the aperture.
I use auto ISO, set to ISO 800 minimum to ISO 1600 maximum. Auto white balance, metering mode is set to spot metering and shooting mode is set to continuous Lo.
I tweak the camera setting a lite bit as the light is changing during the show: with slower songs I turn down the shutter speed to 1/200 and with the last few songs, when there’s a lot of light on the stage, I turn down the ISO to 200 or 400.
Know your camera, understand the settings, make some short cuts in the menu to change fast and guaranteed that your photos will get better every time.
And the most important rule off all: enjoy the show!
